PIANO:
KEEPING THE BALANCE AND PEACE IN MY LIFE
Why
play music? Must I torture myself with tireless
hours of concentration and stress instead of having
some fun in my down time? Isn’t it enough
just to listen? Can’t I appreciate music
without having to play it? Well, after nearly
12 years of playing piano, I realize that music
makes a difference. Life is full of work, and
it takes hard work to survive. Sometimes the rewards
may not be quite what we expect. We might even
feel that we deserve more than what we receive.
Unlike life, however, music is simple: the quality
of a piece reflects how much work is put into
it.
Music is not just about work though; music is
freedom of expression. It gives you a chance to
delve into a world where your mind can let go
and create music. Though someone else may have
composed a piece you play, your interpretation
of the printed material is entirely your own.
My life demands plenty outside of school, so my
time at the piano is very focused. Yet, I still
enjoy music and embrace the pleasure of relaxing
and playing piano.
This disc is a tribute to my family and teacher,
Mary Kay Kapustka, who helped inspire my passion
and dedication to piano.

April, 2004
I have had the rare privilege of
teaching Keith the joys inherent in becoming an
accomplished pianist since his first piano lesson,
the fall of 1994. He has continued his lessons
without interruption for ten and one half years.
Earning his Senior Diploma from the Piano Guild
this spring, 2004, marks his eleventh successful
entry in the Auditions. He earned the special
award given for five successful Auditions consisting
of a ten piece program for each year after his
first five years of study. Now, as he graduates
and embarks on a new life adventure, he will always
justly be able to take pride in this diploma achieve-ment.
Through the rigor of fulfilling the requirements
of eligibility for this award, he has established
a solid foundation for future piano exploration
upon which to build throughout his adult life.
Keith was always a well rounded individual with
many varied interests and sophisticated tastes.
He consistently excelled in school while at the
same time excelling in every sport he decided
to play, year around. Keeping piano as one of
his priorities, consistently pursuing excellence,
never having his commitment falter is a truly
remarkable achievement in 21st century society.
It was a joy to observe him pass through the various
stages of development, always as a fine young
gentleman. Keith will always have the enrichment
that his piano lessons provided as he proceeds
down his chosen career path. Thank you, Keith,
for letting me be a part of your young life in
such a way that will enable us always to share
a special friendship.
